Indian Head Pennies

The United States Bureau of the mint commenced circulating these one-cent coins, called Indian Head pennies, between 1859 and 1909. The Chief Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint, called James Barton Longacre, designed the pennies. When the war came to an end, the reign of the Indian Head penny began. While these coins fared incredibly well for collectors, they became far less in demand when more than 100 million were in circulation by the time 1907 came about. 1901 saw the penny enjoying an aesthetic redesign, where Victor D. Brenner replaced the Indian Head design with a Lincoln likeness in 1901.
